Legislative history as recent as the late 1980’s , educates us about the general public’s unwavering concerns surrounding health impacts incurred by medical waste disposal. It was during this time in which the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) still held authority over medical waste handling. As such, under the EPA’s instruction, a short two (2) year waste-tracking study entitled, the Medical Waste Tracking Act (MWTA) of 1988 was conducted. It is crucial to understand some finer details of this orchestrated research. A nine-page directive was drafted and launched within one (1) year through the Reagan administration in response to public outcry following a seemingly deliberate dump of medical waste into the waters. Many concluding from the apparent evidence the intentional illegal disposal arose from companies’ desire to evade associated legal disposal fees of approximately $1500/ton .

Royal College of Nursing chief executive Pat Cullen said nurses would find the report "galling", adding " if this money had been used more wisely and decent quality PPE bought in the first place, then nurses' lives might have been saved." Labour deputy leaderAngela Rayner said: " Ministers have been carelessly burning taxpayers' money by the billionas unusable gowns, goggles, and gloves literally go up in flames."

On April 6th, 2022, the scope of the 1992 regulations was officially changed. The expansion recognizes that all extended contributors to any branch of an organization’s tree must be afforded protective means.

Much like you wouldn’t substitute oven mitts for gardening gloves, you shouldn’t be replacing gown needs with coveralls. As the personal protection equipment industry and regulation boards work to regain footing in workplace safety, one major component to success is the attention to design and returns. Faced with scarcity and duress, professionals across both healthcare and non-healthcare workplaces adopted far below best-in-class solutions in valiant efforts to meet industry demands. At the height of trying times, we heard of healthcare personnel forced to don garbage bags to “protect” themselves. To imagine heroes wrapped like trash is horrific, but to understand the impact on the personnel themselves and their confidence in providing quality care is far worse at best.
